Summary
-
1.
Capacitance measurements of the double layer of a lead electrode have proved that there exist substantial differences between the properties of the double layer in molten lithium and sodium halides (fluorides excepted), on the one hand, and those in potassium and cesium halides, on the other.
-
2.
In molten lithium and sodium halides, the capacitance is higher and depends more strongly on the nature of the anion than in molten potassium and cesium halides. The phenomena observed may be explained by assuming that Li+ and Na+ are adsorbed in larger than equivalent amounts and that the capacitance depends on the “deformation of the structure” in the double layer.

3.
It has been confirmed that the I−-ion is surface-active in molten chlorides and that the F−-ion is only slightly surface-active.
