Summary
The character of the ultraviolet and infrared spectral curves, the large angle of rotation, and the color indicate that the vincanidine molecule contains the 2-methyleneindoline chromophoric system conjugated with an aldehyde group, which is confirmed by the preparation of breakdown products of vincanidine: 3H-indole (II), indoline (III), and indole (IV) derivatives. Such a complex chromophoric system is characteristic for alkaloids of the vincanineakuammicine type.
