By the action of sodium in liquid ammonia on 2,2-bis[4-(diethoxymethyl)-5-(ethylthio)-2-thienyl]butane a reaction occurs that is analogous to the reaction that we have described previously for the acetal of 5-ethyl-2(ethylthio)-3-thiophencarboxaldehyde and leads to the formation of a compound having the properties of the dimercapto dialdimine (IX).
