New vinyl ether polymers

Communication 4. Stereospecific copolymerization of vinyl ethers with methyl acrylate and with methyl methacrylate at room temperature

Bulletin of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Division of chemical science Aims and scope

Summary

  1. 1.

The conditions were found for the polymerization of methyl acrylate and of methyl methacrylate and for their copolymerization with vinyl ethers in presence of a homogeneous stereospecific-polymerization catalyst at room temperature.

  2. 2.

The composition of the benzene-soluble fraction of the vinyl ether copolymers is directly related to the original monomer ratio and can be controlled.

  3. 3.

The methyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate polymers obtained are high-melting thermostable products which, judging from their solubilities and thermomechanical properties, have a three-dimensional structure. Methyl acrylate-alkyl vinyl ether copolymers exist in the highly elastic state over a considerable temperature range.
