Kinetics of anodic and chemical reactions in Kolbe's electrosynthesis

  • Published:
Bulletin of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Division of chemical science Aims and scope

Summary

  1. 1.

Discharging of the carboxylic anion in aqueous solutions takes place at potentials which are more positive than potentials corresponding to oxygen liberation.

  2. 2.

In aqueous solutions Kolbe's electrosynthesis is made possible by retardation of the discharging of water molecules owing to adsorption of the carboxylic anion on the oxidized platinum surface, or to formation of oxidic anion compounds with platinum.

  3. 3.

On the basis of a simplified reaction scheme, an approximate relation is given for calculating the yield of ethane from electrochemical data.
