Effect of porosity on the mechanical properties of materials produced by powder metallurgy techniques

Soviet Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics Aims and scope

Conclusions

  1. 1.

An analysis of two possible mechanisms of strength loss has led to the derivation of a formula, which is verified by experimental literature data, describing the effects of porosity, over the whole range of its variation, upon the mechanical properties of materials produced by powder metallurgy methods.

  2. 2.

A systematic examination is made of all the existing formulas describing this dependence. It is shown that these formulas are only applicable over limited ranges of porosity variation. The relationship of these formulas to each other and also to the formula obtained in this work is analyzed.

  3. 3.

A method is propsed enabling logσ vsθ plots to be constructed when only a limited amount of experimental data is available.

  4. 4.

It is shown that the mechanical properties of porous materials can be compared with the aid of the magnitudesσ 0 and B orσ 0 andθ *,θ * being the porosity causing the strength of a material to fall by half. Analytical expressions showing good agreement with experimental data have been deduced describing the relationship betweenθ * and B.
