Factors influencing structure formation in and some properties of aluminum/carbonfiber composite materials

Soviet Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics Aims and scope

Conclusions

  1. 1.

In the manufacture of an aluminum-carbon-fiber composite material, specimens of three types can be obtained, characterized by: a) pull-out of fibers, b) well-developed splintered fracture, and c) brittle fracture. Transition from the first to the second and third types of fracture occurs when the infiltration pressure, temperature, or time is increased.

  2. 2.

Maximum values of mechanical properties are exhibited by specimens characterized by splintered fracture, similar to that observed with natural composite materials, e.g. wood.

  3. 3.

The lower strength of the other specimens is due to weak interface bonds (specimens with the first type of fracture) or to loss of strength suffered by the carbon fibers as a result of their reaction with the matrix melt (specimens with the third type of fracture).

  4. 4.

The range of optimum processing conditions, resulting in the formation of specimens of the composite possessing good mechanical properties, is very narrow. To improve the properties of the material, it will be necessary to devise methods of pretreatment of fibers which will facilitate interlaminar shear in the material and to optimize the production process.
