Summary
The total and ‘available’ forms of manganese in high organic matter content soils are reported. Most of the manganese is retained in an unavailable form either by organic matterper se or by some components of organic matter and, as a result, the ‘available’ forms are extremely low and fall below the critical limits. Retention studies indicate that, exchange processes in the soil are more responsible for the retention of added manganese than redox processes. Organic matter as such does not quantitatively represent the component or components that influence the manganese retentive capacity of the soil. There is an indication to suggest that, if most of the total manganese is in organic form then fixation of added manganese various inversely with total manganese content.
