Summary
-
1.
On the basis of the investigation described, a study was made of the regularities of hot pressing and the mechanical properties of lanthanum, samarium, europium, and dysprosium hexaborides.
-
2.
Dense components, with a density approaching the theoretical one, from LaB6, SmB6, EuB6, and DyB6 can be produced by hot pressing at temperatures of 2223–2323°K and a pressure of 49.0 · 107 N/m2.
-
3.
The hexaborides of the rare-earth elements are characterized by high brittleness. Their bending strength at room temperature, is 125–183 MN/m2.
