Mean free path of THz phonons in aluminum films

Abstract

We have measured the rise of temperature in superconducting aluminum bolometers under irradiation of thermal phonon pulses. Using experimentally confirmed model calculations, the frequency dependent phonon absorption can be derived as a fit parameter. A comparison is made to the earlier determined phonon absorption in tin and lead.
