Summary

The anorexigenic and psychomotor stimulating effect of d-Amphetamine is shown to be potentiated by the Monoaminoxydase inhibitors Iproniazid and Pivaloylbenzylhydrazine in rats. The effect of Amphetamine and its potentiation by certain Monoaminoxydase inhibitors is discussed in connection with the following mechanisms:

  1. 1.

Liberation of catecholamines at Amphetamine specific sites.

  2. 2.

Direct effect of Amphetamine in the central nervous system in contrast to its peripheral effect.

  3. 3.

Crossreacting effects of catecholamines and Amphetamine on their respective metabolism.

  4. 4.

    Inhibition of Amphetaminoxydase.
