Summary
By extraction of the rare earths as salicylate complexes at pH 4.5 with methylisobutyl ketone they are concentrated and separated from most of the matrix elements. The organic extract is injected directly into the acetylene-nitrous oxide flame, the sensitivity being better than with aqueous solutions. A further increase in sensitivity and also some advantages in the extraction step are achieved by addition of Cd. The coextraction of other metal salicylate complexes and the possibilities of suppression of interferences have been investigated. The method leads to a 30–60 fold increase in sensitivity, according to the particular element considered, and thus allows the determination of some rare earths down to the 0.1 ppm range in rocks, cements and concretes. For several standard rocks the method gave very good agreement with the nominal rare earth contents.
