Summary
-
1.
The methods of inhalation anesthesia used for mammals can also be applied to medium and small sized birds (Fig. 1). Small birds can be anesthetized in a closed system using a special modification of the to-and-fro method (Fig. 1c). The consumption of relatively expensive Fluothane and of oxygen is very small, so that inhalation anesthesia, which is more advantageous than injection anesthesia, is not more expensive.
-
2.
The classical scheme of the stages of anesthesia as described by Guedel can also be applied to the pigeon (Figs. 2 and 3).
-
3.
In pigeons the depth of anesthesia can be simply and safely controlled by monitoring breathing, heart rate, dilation of the pupil, eyelid reflex, corneal reflex, reflex of the pupil and ECG (Figs. 2 and 3).
-
4.
In the budgerigar anesthesia can only be controlled safely by monitoring the ECG (Fig. 4).
-
5.
The anesthetic range of Fluothane in an anesthesia lasting several hours amounts to 0.7–2.5% Fluothane for the pigeon and 1.0–2.0% for the budgerigar, if the animal has not been treated chirurgically. Following severe operations on the pigeon the anesthetic range shifts to 0.3–1.0% Fluothane. The budgerigar was not studied under these conditions.
-
6.
Unusual positions of body and wings in anesthesia put more stress on the budgerigar than on the pigeon.
Zusammenfassung
-
1.
