Some aspects of the respiratory function in man acclimatized to high altitudes (the Himalayas)

Summary

The effect of a 60 days period of acclimatization at 5000 metres on some respiratory parameters, such as vital capacity, inspiratory reserve volume, exspiratory reserve volume, tidal air, maximal exercise ventilation, as well as on the resting ventilation and on the composition of the alveolar gases at rest, has been investigated.

The most striking results, besides the expected fall in PAco 2, were a decrease in V.C. of 9.84%±4.34 after 30 days and of 12.54%±3.80 after 60 days of acclimatization, and a still greater reduction, of 21.84%, in M.E.V.

The possible cause of these phenomena are discussed.
