Summary
Two cases of late amaurotic idiocy (exitus at the ages of 31 and 51 years respectively) were examined electron-microscopically. Stored material was found predominantly as roundshaped homogeneous bodies of medium density with 0.5–2 μ diameter. These were surrounded by a substance which generally showed a multilayered structure. It appeared mostly as rudimental, loosely arranged lamellae, sometimes, however, as wellformed and compactly arranged elements. The findings are compared with the known electronoptic observations on stored lipids of infantile amaurotic idiocy. In the early and in the late forms of the disease an essentially equal cell process is apparently taking place. The origin of differences in ultrastructural features of the late form is discussed.
