Simultaneous modifications of ventilation and arterialP O2 by catecholamines in the eel,Anguilla anguilla L.: Participation of α and β effects

Journal of comparative physiology Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

In the eel, during the annual period of high metabolic activity, intravenously administered catecholamines cause both hyperventilation and a marked increase in arterialP O2. With adrenaline, hyperventilation results from a β hyperventilatory effect superimposed upon a masked α hypoventilatory effect. The increase in arterialP O2 occurs as a consequence of hyperventilation, which raises the oxygen diffusion gradient, and hemodynamic adjustments in the gills. The latter result from both α and β vasomotor effects acting together to increase blood flow through the lamellar respiratory pathways.
