Summary
The predictive efficacity of the heat-stable alkaline phosphatase (HSAP) for monitoring the placental function was studied in 2029 serum samples from 350 women. In normal pregnancies there was usually a continuous increase of the HSAP activity. In 85% of the pregnancies complicated by hypertension or EPH-gestosis with significant placental dysfunction, values above or below the normal range or marked changes of the slowly rising trend in serial estimations could be found. The same observations, however, were made in about 30% of these cases without apparent insufficiency of the placenta and in 20% of the normal cases. Generally the predictive value seemed to be better between the 26th and 36th week than near term.
It was concluded that the estimation of the HSAP activity may be used as a very simple screening method in normal and pathological pregnancies. Abnormal results, however, should rather signal a strict monitoring and not therapeutic decisions.
