Summary
In the connective tissue of 134 primary and metastatic ovarian tumours, enzymatically active stromal cells occur in 33%. They are missing, however, in all 47 metastases of primary ovarian carcinomas. Signs of increased hormonal production are observed almost in all tumours with enzymatically active stromal cells. Granulosa- and thecacell tumours do not make an exception from this. The incidence of enzymatically active stromal cells depends on the age of patients, the histologic type of tumour, its form of growth and differentiation. In tumours, treated in advance with Endoxan or with an irradiation, enzymatically active stromal cells are very seldom (4%). Histochemically and morphologically they correspond best to cells of theca interna folliculi. They show a specific pattern of dehydrogenases and hydrolases. Sudanophilic substances are mostly present in these cells. Cholesterol, however, appears only in luteinized stromal cells. The occasionally weak or negative reaction of 3β-ol-steroid-dehydrogenase is discussed.
