Intercrystalline fracture of precipitation-hardening aluminum alloys

Conclusions

The reduction of the plasticity of aged polycrystalline alloys results from an increase in the percentage of intergranular fracture. The nucleation of cracks across the grains is the result of high normal stresses during displacement of grains induced by deformation of precipitation-free zones in the grain boundary areas.

The boundaries along which grains are displaced are opened under the influence of high stresses occurring in dislocation pile-ups at the ends of restrained slip bands.
