Association of carboxylic acids in aqueous solutions from conductivity data

Abstract

Using precision conductivity data for aqueous carboxylic acid systems at 25 and 30°C, accurate thermodynamic ion association and dimerization equilibrium constants were determined. The data for formic, acetic, propionic and butyric acids are analyzed with the Fuoss-Hsia conductance equation as modified by Justice and Barthel. The treatment requires that triple ion formation is negligible.
