Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of a new class of organosilicon compounds with high transparency and nonlinear optical properties are presented. For silicon ended molecules, Si acts mostly as a donor. The presence of a neighbouring silicon does not significantly modify the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT). One Si atom in the middle of a conjugated chain breaks the ICT so that the overall charge transfer may be decomposed into the vectorial sum of each moiety's contribution. Two neighbouring Si-atoms allow more ICT but saturating at a much lower state of interaction between the side groups if compared to a C-C bond. This is the case because hyperconjugation is built up from σ orbitals instead of β ones. Above a certain saturation threshold it deletes the electronic exchange between the two sides which is reflected in a decrease of β0.
