Summary

1.
General view (Fig. 3A and B: During horizontal acceleration stimuli above threshold, the excitation of the ipsilateral M. abductor indicis, M. abductor pollicis, M. flexor pollicis, and M. triceps brachialis increases, however the corresponding contralateral muscles-often except for the M. abd. ind. and the M. tric, brach.-do not respond, or their excitation decreases if they have been active before the onset of stimulus. The M. abd. ind. and the M. tric. brach. frequently respond to contralaterad angular acceleration stimuli also with increase of excitation.
-
2.
Step response of ipsilateral muscles (Fig. 4): The excitationE(t)(mean rate of impulses/0.1 sec) increases at first approximately linearly (Fig. 4A). The mean slope Ė of the phase of increasing excitation grows proportional to the stimulus amplitude\(\ddot \varphi _0\) (Fig. 4C).E(t) often approaches a constant mean levelE p , which grows proportional to log\(\ddot \varphi _0\) (Fig. 4B). The latency periodT L decreases with increasing\(\ddot \varphi _0\) (Fig. 4D).T L is drastically shortened, if the acceleration step is preceded by a constant “preacceleration”\(\ddot \varphi _V\) (Fig. 10B2,3).
-
3.
Impulse response of ipsilateral muscles (Fig. 6A):E(t) decreases exponentially (Fig. 6B). The time constantT alters proportional to the stimulus amplitude\(\dot \varphi _k\) (Fig. 6A, inset).
-
4.
Step response of the spontaneously active contralateral M. flex. poll. (Fig. 8):E(t) decreases to zero or to a constant mean level if the stimulus amplitude is small. After the period of acceleration,E(t) increases again and reaches a value exceeding the level of excitation before onset of stimulus.
-
5.
Impulse response of the spontaneously active contralateral M. flex. poll. (Fig. 9 A): With great stimulus amplitude the excitation increases transiently before it is suppressed completely. After a certain timeT R depending on the stimulus amplitude\(\ddot \varphi _k\) (Fig. 9 B) the excitation starts again and reaches a constant mean levelĒ 2, exceeding the mean levelĒ 1 before the onset of stimulus (Fig. 9C).
-
6.
Step and impulse response result in: During transient angular acceleration stimuli above threshold, the muscle excitationE(t) follows the angular velocity\(\dot \varphi (t)\). The possible neural structures and mechanisms forming the basis of measured input-output relationships are discussed.

1.
