Summary
The effect of smallpox vaccine with Complete Freund's Adjuvant on the Harding-Passey Melanoma of the mouse was compared with the effect of Adjuvant alone. The tumor suspension was inoculated subcutaneously into the neck. This was followed on the same day by inoculation of the virus and Freund's Adjuvant, in a dose of 0.25 ml each, subcutaneously into the side of the back. During the test period, the growth of the tumours as well as the survival rates and the growth curves of the animals were recorded.
-
1.
Smallpox vaccine with Freund's Adjuvant produced astatistically significant delay in the commencement of growth of the tumours. The average survival time of the tumour carriers was significantly prolonged with this treatment.
-
2.
Freund's Adjuvant alone also produced astatistically significant delay in the commencement of tumour growth, which persisted right to the end of the test. The average survival rates of the tumour carriers were also significantly prolonged.
-
3.
Body weight determinations revealed no essential differences among the different test groups.
-
4.
Application of smallpox vaccine failed to produce a statistically significant oncolytic effect.
The possible mechanisms of these results are discussed.
