Summary
-
1.
In cats, the influence of different central nervous states (decerebration, anaesthesia, bad general condition) on the effects of pinna stimulation (PS) was investigated in lumbar extensor fusimotor neurones or in muscle spindles of the triceps surae.
-
2.
In anaesthetized cats, inhibitory effects of PS were predominant, except under light anaesthesia. In decerebrated unanaesthetized animals, facilitation was almost always seen. These facilitatory effects could be progressively reduced and reversibly changed into inhibitory effects by increasing i.v. doses of anaesthetics.
-
3.
The abolition of barbiturate anaesthesia by i.v. application of bemegride (β,β-methyl-ethyl-glutarimid) caused a recovery of facilitation in PS.
-
4.
In contrast, the fusimotor excitation induced by stimulation of the contralateral common peroneal or sural nerve was only supressed, but not reversed in direction, by anaesthetics.
-
5.
The cross-section of descending lateral spinal pathways caused an abolition or decrease of inhibitory effects of PS.
-
6.
It is concluded that diffuse facilitatory as well as inhibitory structures of the reticular formation are activated by PS. The net fusimotor effect of PS results from the combination of these simultaneous contrasting actions. The facilitating structures are more sensitive to anaesthesia or to an impairment of the general condition. The rebound phenomena which occured not only after inhibitory stimuli, are assumed to be due to the different time courses of inhibitory and facilitatory influences of PS and to an additional reciprocal depressing action of the inhibiting structures upon the facilitating ones.
Zusammenfassung
-
1.
