Summary

In 65 urethan anesthetized rats low frequency (1–30 Hz) electrical afferent stimulation of the abdominal vagus elicited cardiovascular and respiratory reflexes, which were eliminated by bilateral cervical vagotomy:

  1. 1.

Heart rate decrease of 1.5 to 55%, mean 13.5±1.9%.

  2. 2.

Sinusarrhythmia and lengthening of the av-conduction time. Two cases of 2∶1 av-block could be observed.

  3. 3.

Respiratory rate reduction of an average of 15%.

  4. 4.

Initial inspiratory apnea of 0.7 to 7 sec duration at stimulation frequencies above 9 Hz.

  5. 5.

Biphasic blood pressure alteration with an initial slight decrease and a following more pronounced rise. This biphasic type was found to be constituted of two components: a) a depressor response with a threshold of 2 Volts, maximum effect at 6 Hz stimulus frequency. b) a pressor response with a threshold of 3 Volts, maximum effect at 20 Hz stimulus frequency. Type a) and type b) responses could be found in a few cases independently. It is shown, that arithmetical addition of these two types leads to the construction of the biphasic type. Two functional fibre groups of the afferent vagus were discussed.

Atropine had no effect on the alteration of respiratory rate and blood pressure, only the bradycardia could be eliminated.
