Summary
The retention and distribution of mercury in the organism during a 4 week period after i.v. administration of230HgCl2 (with carrier), and the influence of s.c. applications of sodium selenite, sodium tellurite and sodium sulfite on this retention and distribution were studied in experiments on mice. Both sodium selenite and sodium tellurite were found to cause a long term retention of mercury in the organism and alter considerably the distribution of mercury in the organs. The effect of sodium tellurite is weaker, and differs from that of sodium selenite. Sodium sulfite does not influence mercury retention and causes only insignificant changes in the distribution of mercury. The effect of these compounds was found to depend upon the extent of their redoxpotentials. Sodium selenite and sodium tellurite are reduced in the organism, and form compounds of a colloidal nature with mercury which are retained in the organism.
