Summary
The corneal epithelium of 56 adult male, albino rats was destroyed in its entire extent through electrocauterization. During the period from 24 hours until six weeks after the operation, the cholinesterase activity of the regenerating cornea was studied.
On the first day, significant acetylcholinesterase activity was primarily evident in the inner layer of the limbus vessels. This activity lasted until the fifth day. Acetylcholinesterase activity then disappeared during the vascularization of the cornea.
The regenerating epithelium shows a marked increase in acetylcholinesterase activity during the first seven days. Enzyme activity gradually decreases from the tenth day oneward but is still heightened, in comparison to the norm, at the end (42cnd day) of the experiment. Differences in the level of enzyme activity exist in the individual layers of the epithelium. Differences in enzyme activity are also evident when progressing from the limbus to the center of the cornea at different stages of the regeneration process.
