Abstract

Tensile creep, intermittent and cyclic fatigue loadings have been applied at room temperature to ± 45° orientations of carbon fibre reinforced plastic. Tensile creep tests have also been performed at 50° C. For this angle-plied orientation, where the matrix and the fibre-resin interface are loaded in shear, considerable creep was observed under all three types of loading. During cyclic fatigue tests cracking was observed towards the end of the specimen lifetime. An empirical relation between displacement of the fatigue machine actuator and the remaining lifetime has been derived. From this relation an estimate of cracking growth rate can be obtained.
