Summary
The dorsal trunc muscles were studied in 5 Cercopithecidae und 4 kangaroos.
The back muscles of the upper limb and the superficial dorsal trunc muscles are stronger developed in the monkeys, however the dorsal bending muscles of the vertebral column preponderate in the kangaroos. With this result, the relative dry weights of the dorsal trunc muscles and the mobility of the vertebral column in the sagittal plane are corresponding.
In this connection the types of locomotion were analysed. The different development of musculature is dependent on the diverse claims.
The upright posture of the kangaroos in the bipedal locomotion, explains that the vertebral neural spines of the kangaroos represent longer lever-arms for the acting muscles above all in the thoracic region than the neural spines of the monkeys.
The dorsal trunc muscles and the neural spines are functionally adapted to the different postures of the vertebral column—mainly horizontal in the quadrupedal monkeys, more vertical in the kangaroos.
Slijper's (1946) thesis for the inclination of the neural spines are conditionally current in Cercopithecidae and kangaroos.
