Summary
Normal mitochondria may be demonstrated by means of three typical enzyme reactions as fine granules of equal size which are distributed regularly orver the whole cytoplasm showing only slight accumulation in the zone around the nucleus. They are found in all proliferating layers of the epidermis.
Degenerated mitochondria show incomplete enzyme reactions. Furthermore, they are enlarged and clumped and strikingly prefer the perinuclear zones. They occur, especially in chronic acanthoses, in the upper stratum Malpighii, and in the case of parakeratosis, also in the horny layer.
The results are discussed in relation to histochemical, biochemical, and electron-microscopical results of other authors.
