Summary

“Normal” lithium concentrations were determined by flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry in the following organs and tissues of 12 male and 12 female adult rats: Red blood cells, blood serum; parotis, submandibular gland; ovary; uterus; testes; pituitary, adrenal gland, thyroid, thymus; abdominal muscle, thigh muscle, heart muscle; brain (9 different parts), trigeminus nerve; pancreas, liver, kidney; femur, incisor tooth, xiphoid process. — The highest lithium concentrations were found in bone and teeth (60–80 nEq/g dry weight) and in the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland (59 nEq/g) the lowest in blood serum (<5 nEq/ml). Only two organs showed significant sex differences: adrenals and thymus gland.
