Summary
The development of a new method for the mass spectrometric isotope dilution analysis of nitrate traces is described. The formation of negative NO −2 thermal ions at a hot metal surface is used for the mass spectrometric detection. The optimum conditions for the ionization process depending on the filament material, the filament temperature and the sample compound are discussed. Enriched 15NO −3 is used as a spike solution. By this method the nitrate traces could be analysed down to the ng/g-level. In the concentration range 10–30 μg/g which is especially important for drinking water, the relative external standard deviation of the analyses is 0.1%. As the described isotope dilution technique is a definitive method without any external standardization it is especially suitable as a calibration method.
