Summary

By means of autoradiography preserved cartilage homografts are studied after transplantation into the bullas of rabbits. The donor animal had received tritiated aminoacids, phenylaline and tyrosine on seven consecutive days. Autoradiographs of the cartilage of the donor animal showed a uniform distribution of silvergrains in the emulsion convering the histologic slide indicating the H3-aminoacids incorporated into the proteins of the mucopolysaccharide protein complex. During the time of observation no change in the silvergrainpattern was observed except in areas of resorption where a remarcable decrease of radioactivity can be found. The activity concentrates over connective tissue cells resorbing small parts of the transplant. This observation indicates that the cells play an active part in the brake down of the matrical proteins. The labelled fragments pass an intracellular stage before the majority is removed by the body fluids. A small quantity may be reused, if bone formation occurrs. As shown by other authors for the formation of the cartilage matrix, this study proves a transcellular pathway of matrical constituents for the resorbtion as well.
