Summary
The process of demyelination as well as the morphological changes in cultured spiral ganglion cells were observed under conditions of reduced oxygen tension. Demyelination started 2 hrs after the oxygen tension reached 0 mm Hg and was completed in 8 hrs. The degeneration of the ganglion cells started after 6 hrs and finished in 12 hrs. The demyelination, caused by anoxia, started mainly with the formation of vacuoles within Schwann's cells following the disappearance of the myelin. The fact that the myelin sheath disappears under anoxic conditions adds to the understanding of the etiology of peripheral nervous disorders such as peripheral facial paralysis and some cases of retolabyrinthine deafness.
