Abstract
Iron in concentrated hydrochloric acid as well as in many other chloride solutions can be determined directly by use of a carbon paste electrode in the concentration range from 10−3 to 10−6%. At the limits of the concentration range indicated, the relative standard deviation lies between 0.03 and 0.15, respectively. The determination of iron in metals and salts of other inorganic and organic acids is also possible, provided the solution to be analized has a chloride concentration of between 5 and 6 M. The process occurring at the electrode is due presumably to the deposition or the concentration of iron chloride, the dissolution of which is connected with complex formation. The influence of 37 cations and 12 anions was investigated. Measurable interferences occur when the concentration of gold, copper and antimony is equal, 3 times and 20 times that of the iron concentration, respectively. The applicability of the method is demonstrated by the analysis of numerous samples.
