Summary
We investigated in a gas chamber the conditioned avoidance behavior of 4 groups of 6 rats each under exposure to trichlorethylene and under control conditions. Daily exposures of 3–4 hours were repeated over 1–3 weeks. Frequent gaschromatographic control analyses revealed an average exposure to 600 ppm throughout the experiments. Weight, growth, and learning of the avoidance response were not affected by this dosage. On the other hand, this solvent caused a definite slowing down of the extinction rate of the previously learned avoidance behavior and a tendency to prolonged response latencies in escaping from the painful electric shooks.
