Abstract
The reliability of a new apparatus for evaluation of the effects of some central stimulant and depressant drugs on the locomotor activity of mice has been investigated. The locomotor activity of normal mice, of mice treated with chlorpromazine (i.p.), diazepam (p.o.), methylphenidate (s.c.), d-amphetamine (s.c.) and pemoline (p.o.) has been determined.
The depressant effect of chlorpromazine and diazepam, the stimulant effect of amphetamine, methylphenidate and pemoline are dose-related.
The stimulant properties of amphetamine are seen only in mice in which the normal orienting response has worn off.
