Noise in the measurements of magnetic susceptibilities

Abstract

Three methods of measuring diamagnetic susceptibilities are compared with respect to sensitivity.

(1) The balance method is limited in sensitivity by thermal noise with a signal to noise ratio SNR of 3×108.

(2) The inductance method is limited by the Nyquist noise with an SNR of 5×104.

(3) The magnetometer method is very insensitive with an SNR of 40 due to Barkhausen noise.
