Summary
-
1.
In dark-grown Chlorella pyrenoidosa (211-8b), supplied with 1% glucose, 1.5% CO2 in air at 30° C, the ratio of total carbohydrates to total proteins (C/P) is 2.9.
-
2.
When the algae are grown with 1% glucose in the light (90 f.c. white light) the C/P ratio shifts to 1.5; this effect is not due to enhanced nitrate reduction.
-
3.
Enhancement by light of protein production requires the blue part of the visible spectrum; an equal number of red quanta is ineffective.
-
4.
A distinct change in the composition of the alga is already produced by small amounts of blue light (ca. 200 ergs/cm2 sec); the highest protein level is reached at 4,000–5,000 ergs/cm2 sec and maintained at still higher intensities.
-
5.
The light-enhanced protein production in glucose culture has an action spectrum with only one broad maximum at 450–490 nm; its total course gives support to the idea, that carotenoids (and not flavins) are involved in the regulation of protein synthesis.
Zusammenfassung
-
1.
