Summary
Urnatella gracilis is the only fresh-water representative of the class of Entoprocta.
In contrast to all other entoprocta one can distinguish in Urnatella in the calyx and stalk a great number of flame bulbs, on the average 28 in the calyx and up to ten in each segment of the stalk. The structure of the protonephridial system about which extremely little is known up to now, is described
-
1.
Each protonephridium consists of a terminal organ with two nuclei and a long sinuous capillary belonging to the terminal cell and leading from this a thick walled secondary channel running through four cells with a strongly granulated plasma. A long double-flagellum waves in the secondary channel.
-
2.
All protonephridia on each side of the calyx unite and form the two branches of the Y-shaped terminal duct which runs between the stomach-roof and the atrial floor turning upwards just before the large ganglion and opening out together with the anus and the gonoduct into the “cloaca”.
-
3.
Contrary to the protonephridia of the calyx the protonephridia of the stalk open separately in the lateral region of the stalk segments. They penetrate the epidermal layer and terminate immediately under the cuticula. Under a light-microscope there is no visible opening in the cuticula at all; however, an electron microscopic control shows the cuticula to be of a spongy structure probably allowing the osmotic water to pass through.
-
4.
Each protonephridium consists of five cells all originating from one epidermal cell through a series of teloblastic divisions. By this mode of terminal growth the tubules are pushed deeply into the underlying parenchyma.
Tests concerning the function of the protonephridia rendered the following results.
-
1.
Despite various tests an excretory function could not be observed. The excretion of vital dyes takes place in the cells of the stomach-roof and the rectum only.
-
2.
Stroboscopic measurement of the flickering frequency of flame bulbs clearly shows the dependence of the protonephridial activity on the osmotic pressure of the environmental medium. An increase of salinity immediately causes a decrease in the flickering frequency, until all flame cells stop moving. After removing the animals into fresh-water normal frequency was regained. Experiments carried out with polyional solutions and with glucose solutions in isoosmolar stages showed nearly identical results. Consequently the activity of the flame cells is regulated by environmental osmolarity only. The protonephridial system of Urnatella, therefore, is seen to be a system of organs regulating the steady state of water and ions, whereby the terminal cells have the task of pumping out the osmotic water while the reabsorption of ions takes place in the secondary channels.
