Summary
1. Single nodes of frog motor fibres were perfused at a high constant rate of flow and were subjected to quick changes of the external potassium concentration.
2. Time courses of potential changes following transition from 2,5 to 22.5 or 42.5 mM K+/l and back were recorded both in low (0.26 mM/l) and high Ca (4.2 mM/l) in each preparation.
3. Half-time of potassium depolarization (i.e. time between onset of potential change and reaching half of amplitude in the steady state) in high Ca is about twice of that in low Ca. Half-time of repolarization after short exposure to potassium rich solutions is not significantly different in both Ca concentrations.
4. The time course of depolarization during flow of inward current can be predicted from a family of current-voltage curves in various potassium concentrations.
5. Further results strongly suggest that the instantaneous relation between membrane potential and potassium concentration differs from their steady state relation.
