Summary
The capillaries in the subcommissural organ (SCO) have been investigated with the electron microscope in 53 white Sprague-Dawley rats of different age groups. — During the first weeks of life the capillaries are lined by voluminous, “active” endothelial cells provided with many organelles, invaginations of the plasmalemma and numerous micropinocytotic vesicles. With increasing age the endothelial cells become attenuated and the number of organelles diminishes; the endothelium of adult animals is reduced to a narrow lining. — In the capillaries of young animals two types of thin branches of the basement membrane can be distinguished which protrude into the endothelial cells; later one type develops into the regular subendothelial basement membrane and separates pericytes or their processes from the endothelial cells. — The thickness of the basement membrane varies from capillary to capillary in growing animals and even locally within a single capillary; the average thickness increases with age. — From about the second week on bodies with periodic structure (PSK) appear within local expansions of the basement membrane. Their number increases quite steadily until it reaches the value found in adult animals at about six weeks. These results are discussed with regard to the so-called blood-brain barrier which is not fully developed in the brain of newborn animals. Our former suggestion that in the actively secreting SCO the PSK serve to reduce the function of the barrier locally, is further supported by the fact that the PSK begin to form within the SCO at about the same time at which the barrierwithin the brain becomes effective. — During all stages of life the capillaries are surrounded by astrocytic processes; these contain glycogen during the first weeks. Sometimes also oligodendrocytes, ependymal cells and (secretory) “hypendymal” cells make direct contact with the capillary basement membrane in the SCO. -The observations are discussed in detail.
