Summary
Statocysts in Limax maximus, Limax flavus, and Arion empiricorum contained large hair cells with microvilli and many cilia, and small cells with microvilli and sometimes a modified cilhim. In one case, a modified cilium of this kind was seen in a hair cell. The “normal” cilia of hair cells contained internal filaments in a 9+2 arrangement, basal plates, and basal bodies each with a basal foot and a short root. In view of a centrifugal arrangement of basal feet in the hair cell, it was assumed that the cell may respond to stimuli from all directions; this view was supported by our electrophysiological studies. Large lamellate structures — whorls — were observed in the hair cells. Since one whorl was observed in sections of an axon in the statocyst wall, a continuity was supposed to exist between the axons and the hair cells, the latter probably possessing a sensory function. The statocyst nerve contained two axon bundles of about 14 μ and 3 μ diameter. The main bundle contained some 13 large axons. A notable coincidence between the numbers of axons and hair cells in the statocyst supports the concept of sensory function of the hair cell. Furthermore, small, probably efferent, axons containing vesicles were seen below the statocyst cells.
