Summary
The mucosa of the olfactory region in new-born and in 12 days old white mice was studied in the electron microscope. In these little animals a reliable good fixation by osmiumtetroxide could easily be obtained. The data on the olfactory mucosa as known from light microscopical investigations were confirmed by electron microscopy. The surface of the epithelium is built up by the supporting cells which bear a great number of microvilli. The surface is covered by a thin film of mucus produced by glands which are situated in the Tunica submucosa. The olfactory sensory cells are embedded in the layer of supporting cells. From each sensory-cell perikaryon, situated in the deeper layer of the epithelium, one dendritic receptor-process is sent up to the surface of the epithelium and protruded beyond it as a rod or vesicle 2 or 3 μ, long. Each of the olfactory rods is bearing some sensory cilia as receptor-organelles nearly paralleling the surface of the epithelium and over a long distance embedded between the numerous microvilli of the supporting cells. Reaching the Tunica submucosa, the minute axons of the sensory cells are collected by Schwann-cell processes in thin bundles of 20 to 100 axons each of varying diameter; several of theses bundels build up a Filum olfactorium. Within the Fila olfactoria the axons reach the Olfactory bulbus without being interrupted by synapses. Undifferentiated basal cells lie in the basal region of the epithelium. Three types of cells were seen in the Bowman's glands. The excretory ducts within the olfactory epithelium are built up by specialized supporting cells and are lacking a peculiar basement membrane.
