Observations on a gangliocytoma of the medulla oblongata

Summary

A case of a gangliocytoma of the Medulla oblongata in a 12-year-old boy is described. Apart from headache and adipositas, which may have been unrelated to the tumor, there were no clinical manifestations. Finally the tumor caused an acute brain edema. Histologically the tumor was composed principaly of well-differentiated neurons, their unmyelinated processes, glial cells, and small “lymphoid” cells.

Zusammenfassung

Es wird ein Gangliocytom der Medulla oblongata bei einem 12jährigen Jungen beschrieben. Abgesehen von Kopfschmerzen und Adipositas, welche unabhängig vom Tumor bestanden haben können, fielen keine klinischen Symptome auf. Präfinal kam es zu einem akuten Hirnödem. Histologisch bestand der Tumor im wesentlichen aus gut differenzierten Nervenzellen, ihren unbemarkten Fortsätzen, Gliazellen und kleinen „lymphoiden“ Zellen.
