Summary
We describe a method of transorbital needle autopsy for sampling cerebral tissue about 15 min after death. The specimens of orbital gray and white matter examined under the electron microscope exhibited a tissue preservation ranging from satisfactory to excellent. The validity of the method received further confirmation by some interesting incidental findings observed in five cases known to have been free of neurologic and psychiatric disease. Attention is called to the usefulness of this approach for the ultrastructural study of the brain in various pathologic situations of neurologic and/or psychiatric interest. Furthermore, the importance of this method as a means to obtain an ultrastructural baseline of human central nervous tissue in different age groups is briefly mentioned.
