Summary
To approximate the question after a relation of the adrenocortical function to the oestrous cycle by morphological methods, we measured the lipid droplets in the zonae glomerulosa, and fasciculata, and the x-zone of adult virgin mice, considering the phases of the oestrous cycle. We distinguished four states of the cycle by vaginal smears. Besides we examined a pregnant mouse, and one after stopping lactation. On electron microscopical photographs of thin sections we measured the diameters of the liposomal sections and drew the diameter distribution curves. We got the true diameter distribution curves by a mathematical method.

1.
Not considering the oestrous cycle, we found typical curves for each zone examined: a) Zona glomerulosa: two peaks, adequate to two size groups of lipid droplets. b) Zona fasciculata: one peak in curves, which change individually, concerning the zone of dispersion and the site and height of the peak. c) x-zone: narrow zone of dispersion, and one high peak at 0.3 μ.
-
2.
We directly computed the relative rates of the liposomal volumes in the tissue (the visible lipid rate) from the measured distributions of the liposome sections. We found in: a) the zona glomerulosa: about 15%; b) the zona fasciculata: 10–33%; c) the x-zone: 3.5–8.4%.
-
3.
Examining the diameter distribution curves, according to the oestrous cycle, we found: a) Zona glomerulosa: antagonistic, cyclic undulations of the two peaks. b) Zona fasciculata: no certain result. c) X-zone: no relation to the cycle.
-
4.
We assume cyclic undulations of the synthesis of aldosterone.
