Summary
The influence of the vital-dyes: Neutral Red, Acridine-Orange and 9-Amino-Acridine on the ultrastructure of mitochondria in mouse-ascites-tumour-cells was investigated by means of the electron-microscope. All the changes observed were found to depend obviously on the concentration of the dyes, which, however, caused no single or substrate-specific alterations, but moreover a certain variety of different changes characteristic for each of the dyes. — Higher concentrations of vital-dyes caused the disappearance of peripheral mitochondria. Connections between mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum are frequent, while direct communications between the intramitochondrial spaces and the endoplasmic reticulum has never been found.
The significant correlation between nucleus and mitochondria might probably influence the transfer of substances from the nucleus into the cytoplasma (and vice versa). The finding that these interrelations are more prominent after application of vital-dyes seems to point to a certain rôle mitochondria might play in this field.
