Innervation of the anterior byssal retractor muscle in Mytilus edulis L.

I. Histology

Zeitschrift für Zellforschung und Mikroskopische Anatomie Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

The intrinsic innervation of the anterior byssal retractor muscle in Mytilus edulis L. has been demonstrated using Maillet's osmium-zinc iodide technique (ZIO). Grouped and isolated osmiophilic cells, thought to be neurons, and nerve fibers forming neuromuscular contacts and nerve endings, have been observed. When the period of fixation is not overly prolonged, glio-interstitial cells may also be distinguished.
