Summary
The brain-ventricle border of the recessus infundibularis was systematically examined with the electron microscope. Evidence was found that Herring bodies can egress into the ventricle liquor by means of transependymal diapedesis. The axonal swelling termed a Herring body contains numerous multilamellated corpuscles and polymorphous, electron-dense structures that are mainly to be interpreted as neuronal degradation products. Axons of the tractus supraoptico-hypophyseus, filled with neurosecretory substance, end singly in the recessus infundibularis. These findings lend support to the thesis of a “neuroventriculocrinia” that can consist in the discharge of neuronal degradation products or of normal neurosecretory granules. The functional significance of these phenomena has not yet been elucidated.
